I'm really not sure what I think here tbh. But I'm sure there's discussion in this article, seems rather unusual in the grand scheme of things.

Putting a court order on your own daughter? Crazy!

Must be a cute kid, when the Skids misbehave or do fart noises I'd hate for anyone to think I was their mother!

I recall some threads here where little ones in particular have called their step mums 'mummy' or similar and was entirely of their own doing and nowt to do with Dad or step mum.  as for trying to get a court order - RIDICULOUS and amazed it even got to court!

I think that a child often just sees a motherly figure and labels her mum. Recently I have been trying to be more nurturing with my skids and the youngest has severall times slipped and called me mum. I think it reflects our relationship rather than some huge compliment to me. I can remember forgetting sometimes and calling my teacher mum at that age!  Cheesy

Of course there will always be step-parents and partners who are over the moon at this development and attribute it to the child's level of adoration toward that step-parent and encourage it. Its not adoration, its just whoever's wiping peanut butter off your jumper.

Unluckily dialect-wise, my name is very similar to 'Mammy' in SDs pronunciation.  Its different in my area that we use 'mammy' mostly, whereas DH (&SDs) locale use 'Mummy' which I find affected and unnatural (the locality issues around accent are tremendous, I'm dreading moving, I'll be marked out straight away, and it will be noticed and mentioned, and probably mocked at every opportunity, i'm growing an especially thick skin lol).  So i do have to correct her quite a bit, she seems to be moving on to calling me 'Auntie' on occasion, which I'm even less comfortable with.  I've only ever called, refered and encouraged her to call me my own name though!

How sad.

BM had a go at OH recently saying Wee One refered to me as Mummy. We're not sure we believe her but she said they were playing a game...

BM: Who is Granpa?
WO: X
BM: Who is Gran?
WO: Y
BM: Who is Daddy?
WO: OH
BM: Who is Mummy?
WO: Button

If he did do it I recon it's becuase he associates me with OH so my name just slipped out. He has called me mummy afew times but I correct him and he's fine with it. Much as I'd love to be his Mum, and much as I dislike the woman it would be disrespectful of her role of BM. Much as I dislike her we want to teach Wee One to respect her.
